Book Review: Revolution 2020

Revolution 2020: This is another fabulous book authored by the contemporary story writer Chetan  Bhagat. The story has both humor and satire, while also incorporating a love story, which is typical of Chetan's novels. The story revolves around Gopal, a farmer's son, in Benaras, who is poverty stricken after their land becomes stuck in a family property dispute. Gopal's father does not want to reconcile and sell the land, which he looks upon as an indispensible asset, being a farmer. He has a dream of  educating Gopal so that he gets admission in one of the IITs, and has a lucrative career after that.

The book portrays a realistic representation of the lives of students aspiring for IIT JEE exam, who enrol themselves in Coaching centres in Kota. It reveals the frustration of the students, who, in trying to fulfil their parent's expectation, make their lives miserable, and put up with the agony of reading the course material, only to face disappointment, again.

It also shows the current state of political works carried out in India...: why the Ganga river could not be cleaned, even after so many funds and so many years. Why there are Engineering Colleges, mushrooming like weeds all over big cities, with only aim of  making money, and the sad state of the education system in India.

Corruption is prevelant in  state and municipal corporations, in every Government related work, one needs to make monetary bribes for getting every work done.

It also shows how the truthful, honest people, who are few in number, have the power to bring the corrupt to the brim of devastation. The educated and young journalist, Raghav, who attempts to clean India's corrupt practices, through his journal, "Revolution 2020" ends up getting the renowned politician, Mr Shukla, in jail, by his unexpected disclosures.

All through out the book, our sympathies remain with Gopal, the narrator, whether it is his stay in Kota, whether he is working for the new college he setup, or when he yearns to meet the love of his life, who has been befriended by his school time friend, Raghav.

It is because Gopal by nature, is not corrupt, he has been shown as a naive person, a victim of circumstances, who turns to adopt corrupt practices, as he gets entangled in the scheme of corrupt politicians, who are making money out of government funds, for their own personal benefit.

Though the story ends on a sad note, it raises a finger at the reader: have you done your bit to contribute to the revolution 2020? This is the revolution Raghav dreams of: - to face the reality, to uncover the prevailing kingdom of untruth and dishonesty,  to end corruption, to have a new world, and to help build a good nation!
